This Blues In The Schools educational program was held in the music education department of Scavo Campus located at 19th and Locust in Des Moines, IA. The program ran daily from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday June 18th - 29th, and culminated in a live performance on the U.S. Cellular stage at the Des Moines Arts Festival at 7:00 PM Friday June 29th.
Each student was given the opportunity to learn to play either the guitar or harmonica, how to write music along with the history and culture of the blues and its impact in Iowa. The course provided information on the history of Blues in conjunction with music instruction for guitar, harmonica and voice with a possible art component. Students kept a journal, which contained names, definitions, handouts and diagrams related to music along with their own thoughts and notes. The students learned how to recognize the relationship between Blues music and its cultural heritage as well as how this musical form has effected, influenced or created other musical forms. By the end of the session, they were able to play 12 bars of Blues on a guitar, a harmonica and through singing.

The Central Iowa Blues Society is proud to have accomplished the third installment of their Blues In The Schools, Artist in Residence Program. The students, together known as the "Sound Rangers", showcased their new talents and original songs at a special performance during the Des Moines Arts Festival.

Participating B.I.T.S. students include Uzo Nwaturuocha (11), Steven Banks (17), DeWayne Robinson, Jr. (17), Ben Monroe (15), and Drew Davis (15)

Their original songs include "Auto Jam", "Access Denied", "Too Early" and "DeWayne’s View".

The EDUCATORS

Kevin Burt
bfburt55@aol.com

Kevin Burt is recognized as one of the Mid-west’s top blues heritage educators, providing his blues education program as a registered artist with the state of Iowa. The program ranges from one hour presentations to full residencies. In October of 2006 he completed a residency for the Mississippi Valley Blues Society which received high marks from both the participants and his sponsors. He has just completed his first book "Just Play It: an introduction to blues Harmonica: Classroom Method". His approach is simple, education through entertainment. His program has been going strong since 1994 and plans to continue on, just like the music he loves. For the past 15 years "B.F." Burt has been electrifying audiences throughout the Midwest and dispelling "non-believers" across the country in his steady march on the blues circuit. His soul-inspired brand of blues is consistently compared to a range of premium artistry from Bill Withers to B.B. King.

Kevin is self-taught musician (harmonica and guitar) whose smooth, warm vocal presentation sets a mood of relaxed exhilaration, with a welcome mixture of serious music and infectious humor audiences of all ages seem to enjoy.
